The hard working, slightly obnoxious mascots of Times Square are receiving a rare present from the NYPD this holiday season: a reprieve. According to the Daily News, the department dispatched a “length directive” to cops last month, instructing them to avoid ticketing costumed characters who aren’t breaking the law, as it’s probably not good PR to be giving summonses to Mickey Mouse and Elmo in front of tourists and their kids. Baltimore-based artist Sam Gibbons unleashes a hellish toon trip onto his custom-cut acrylic panels. Watch the tangle of limbs weave through jigsawed, cannibalistic orgies and loop in and out of disintegrating facial orifices of classic animation’s heroes. Gibbons’ latest series of psychedelic Roschach pieces reference the early work of Bob Clampett (Porky Pig, etc.), Tex Avery (Daffy Duck, etc.) and Charles Manson (Sharon Tate, etc.). “Directed by Kilroy,” Sam Gibbons, Dec 10 – Jan 7, Jonathan LeVine Gallery, New York
The High Line has won all sorts of fancy awards, but whoever thought it would get one for public imbibing? So, minimalist superhero posters and minimalist pictogram posters had a spawn of love children and here they are. Aw, lookit how cute they are too. They’re not intensely sophisticated but, there’s one thoughtful side-effect to reducing these superpowerful fictional pop culture icons down to the basic elements of their recognizable costumes and frequently repeated catchphrases – it’s realizing that those catchphrases are incompetent. Duhpressing. Eviction motions against the first ten victims of this latest wave of cultural pogroms have been filed by the new owner’s ironically named Chelsea Dynasty LLC. Read more »

From coast to shining coast, Occupy Wall Street protesters have lots of demonstrations going on. The NYC-based division has marched over to Goldman Sachs headquarters in Lower Manhattan early this morning and squidding is expected. There’s already numerous reports of arrests. Coinciding with this action, crowds have begun amassing as early as 5:30AM PCT at numerous ports that the notorious investment bank is linked to via their majority ownership of SSA Marine, including Long Beach, Oakland, Portland, and Seattle. The Mounted Unit, established in 1871, has put a call out for more horses, a handy asset for intimidating protesters, but white ones need not apply. According to the Daily News, “A potential NYPD horse can be any breed except thoroughbreds and must have a coat of bay, black or brown.”
These residential towers were designed by MVRDV, a Dutch firm, for a business district in Seoul, Korea which expected to be completed in 2015. Unlike the plumes of fire and smoke associated with the bulging WTC buildings when they were attacked, these 10 floor protrusions form a “pixelated cloud” of patio-like spaces, creating an outdoor oasis, that is breathtaking, but in desperate need of some railings.
