A Painted Bouquets of Owl Heads and a Mauled Cicadas

Brooklyn-based painter Zane York’s solo exhibit opens tomorrow, with painted taxidermied fowl, mounted disembodied animal heads and similar motifs of animal life penetrating human domesticity. Like you’ve never imagined a nest of ladybugs swarming inside your bath sponge!

There’s a bit of a Polly Morgan echoes in some of his more festive fictive arrangements, but less glue and flesh and more oil and canvas. York’s a little esoteric and spiritual about it all — he “minds the beasts.” Therefore, the image of a cicada engulfed by a gang of honey-binging bees should have you thinking about your own life and going damn, I’m so much like this cicada right now. [Insert life-changing epiphany here.] “Stewards,” Zane York, Dec 16 – Jan 22, Causey Contemporary, NYC
