Following “outrage,” avant garde composer Steve Reich is self-censoring Masatomo Kuriya’s cover image of a second plane about to this the WTC from his WTC 9/11 album. It’s comprised of amplified recordings of first responders, kids saying “suddenly it was black outside,” shmira prayers over victims’ body parts and violin drones from the Kronos Quartet who made Requiem for a Dream into horror. Yeah, it’s the photo that’s a little much.

The album has been so far heard only live by select few, but is supposedly the antidote to the “languid sentimentality and unfortunate jingoism that has too often been attached to 9/11 by those who’ve been witnesses from a distance.” Good, in theory. The remixed tragedy field-recordings with a castrated cover will drop on September 20th, two weeks later than planned.
