If deliberate studio demolition, repeated beatings and travel bans weren’t enough, yesterday, Chinese authorities arrested their most famous, vocal artist. Ai Weiwei was detained at the Beijing airport and 40 cops were sent to raid his Beijing studio. Electricity to the neighborhood was cut off. China’s “Twitter” messages mentioning Ai were censored.
The arrest follows an eruption of potentially Revolution-inspiring Tweets from Chinese citizens and Ai’s announcement of opening a studio in Berlin as a haven from China’s increasingly aggressive censorship. The authoritarian response, naturally, is to crush that dangerous “dissident.”
