The arrest and disappearance of activist artist Ai Weiwei (still missing) is just one symptom of China’s new, aggressive crackdown on “dissent.” The authorities arrested and imprisoned dozens of activists, writers, and lawyers for “inciting subversion of state power” and have taken to intimidating and beating foreign reporters as part of the “Big Chill” response to the Jasmine Revolution.

Similarly, things remain dismal in Russia. Before the nationwide beatings and violent arrests during the Strategy-31 marches to defend the citizen’s right to assembly, bloggers have accused Russia’s most popular search engine of censoring images of opposition protests. Just last week, St. Petersburg authorities have shut down Antifascist Film Festival, because truth hurts… so they hurt back.
