This photo of the Tompkins Square Park Riot from 1988 was taken by Ai Weiwei. Before China’s Big Chill, in the late ’80s and early ’90s, the artist lived in the East Village, was buddies with Allen Ginsberg and snapped common neighborhood happenings like police brutality. Culled from a loot of 10,000, you can see a collection of 227 photographs of Ai’s New York at the Asia Society Museum on Park Avenue. “Ai Weiwei: New York Photographs 1983–1993,” Jun 29 – Aug 14, Asia Society Museum, NYC
