The Associate Press recently fired freelance photographer Miguel Tovar for Photoshoping this snap of kids playing soccer in Argentina. That suspiciously solid ground cloud that looks like the Smoke Monster? It’s cloned dust, covering up the photographer’s shadow.
Apparently, “an alert photo editor noticed that the pattern on the dust repeated itself in an unlikely way and subsequent investigations revealed the visual fraud,” as per their staff memo and that’s a no-no.
A warning to compulsive retouchers: They’ll know.
