Right on schedule, Jay Shells unveiled all the signs in his latest etiquette project that we briefly mentioned a few weeks ago and started placing them around Manhattan. In addition to the much needed “Pay Attention While Walking” sign he had a few others addressing some of the pet peeves bound to eat away at New Yorkers.
We’re especially fond of the “Pull Up Your Pants,” which is now reaching epidemic proportions with the advent of skinny jeans and the “Clean Up After Your Horse,” a direct challenge to the NYPD and their habit of not policing their own poop. There’s also one going after the nasty habits of smokers when it comes to discarding their butts and although we hate that as much as the next person, think there’s already enough signs against them. What sign would you like to see? UPDATE: We cut a video of Jay Shells’ handiwork:

Step aside when having a conversation on the sidewalk. You are blocking traffic. But witty.
Don't use your strollers as battering rams.
If your stroller is wider than the concrete square it's on, it's too freakin' big! Share the road
Stop Spitting…it's grotesque.
. . .and disease encouraging!
How about one for those Mexes and Hoodlums on vulgar catcalling and honking at us ladies? LOL totally not classy at allll
Mexes is not classy too.
"Mexes," hmm you don't seem like much of a classy lady to single out any one race. Cat calls are made by every race.
Either is generalizing, Blahhhhh.
Hey, if the vast majority of the time she has someone yell out some stupid crap at her it's a Mehican doing it then it's not generalizing.
When I was growing up it was the Mexes 99% of the time saying some dirty crap to all the girls as they walked past, even ones as young as 12. These guys were mid 20s and up. They honestly didn't give a crap how young the girls were, they were always trying to get their number or get them into their apartments.
It is what it is.
Urinating in alleys, subways, buses … anywhere not a toilet or urinal …
Brilliant!
We need more etiquette signs!
For those who yammer on cell phones all the way through checkout lines with nary a “Hello,” “Please,” or “Thank you” to the workers…or the many muffin-tops of Los Angeles…or Gee — You DON’T Smell Terrific, and I am NOT enjoying your gallons of crappy perfume…
You work with the public..don't you? Me too thanks for saying what I think every day!!
A sign for subway cars:
"One ass, one seat.
love the etiquette signs! how about one for the ladies? they need to pull up their pants too! i am tired of seeing lady butt cracks — not prettier than men's, really. a crack is a crack.
Hmm How about signs that read.
I'm not really on a phone call or checking any thing. I just do not want to talk to you.
So you don't like my life style. I'll wear what i want. where I want. So shut it and mind your damn business.
Be thankful I don't put it out in your eye.
My horse did what? STOP RESISTING OR I'll USE THE TAZER.
How I live my life. How I do my job or just about anything else is none of your business. If you do not like what you See, Hear or Smell please feel free to go somewhere else.
I'll support your rights. Do not feel it gives you the right to step on mine.
Etiquette, Culture, Life
Mine are different from yours. Deal with it.
How about "Get over yourself you self-centered, Pants sagging, Cig Smoking, Moron.
The rights of an individual end at the point where they infringe on the rights of others. Of course, some of these signs speak to more critical issues like picking up poop, which would be more of a sanitary situation. And yes, to leave it there would be not only bad etiquette, but just plain WRONG on many levels. I have the right to walk where I want to without stepping in excrement. (that means poop in case you were wondering.) And don't tell me to walk somewhere else, or step around it. I have the right to NOT have to make allowances for poop. Oh, and I have the right to expect sanitary conditions, which means…no POOP.
As far as your "Etiquette, Culture, Life" being different from mine, that's is sooooo obvious. I'm sooooo thankful for that, especially since, in the area of "etiquette" as a generally accepted behavior in a society, one could substitute the word "manners", neither of which you possess any of the good or acceptable type.
To sum it all up Mr. Skinny-I-am-more-important-than-everybody-else-daddy, I'll use your own words with a slight addition. I'll support your rights. Do not feel it gives you the right to step on mine, just as I have the right to NOT step on…. well, you know, the stuff you're full of.
Totally right Skinnydaddy. Everyone can do whatever the hell they damn well please….including suggesting via signage that what some people are doing is problematic for others, or stupid. It's a free world, so wear your pants around your ankles and others can tell you to pick em up.
Right Dr. Dolittle. Because your opinions are more important than anyone else's. Why? Because your a Doctor. And your opinion is that someone dressing the way they like is akin to total anarchy and the end of civilization.
So as such, when you tell someone of your opinion of they way they dress. You'll understand when they freely tell you what they think of your opinion. At the same time I'm sure you'll learn from your stupidity and will end you adding to the problem the average person on the streets have to deal with on a daily bases.
Thank you and have a great day.
This is beautiful. Exactly the intention of this project…to get people talking. You obviously have a lot to say. All opinions are valuable, yours included. The more attention you pay to this project, the stronger it is. You're doing a wonderful job promoting it.
Well put!
I would like to see: keep your voice down when talking on your cell on the subway. We don't all need to hear about your personal life.
This guy Jay Shells is not a good guy. He’s just another know nothing idiot artist
Hey Slyd. Just because you didn't grow breasts when all the other girls did in grade school, doesn't mean you should bad mouth people you don't know in totally anonymous and safe environments making yourself look even smaller and weaker. I'm sure deep down, you are a wonderful lady though. Lotsa love. JS
personally I could do with LESS signs and visual clutter…how about more trees or positive messages?
I just wanna say thanks for making the effort to educate these ignorant people.
The pull up your pants sign is just brilliant
Loved you on Fox… "fox news lies" AWESOME!!!
Jay everyone is asking me to find you on face book so that they can send you a virtual high five for your last thing about the sign when you were on fox news.
Steve Rechel told me about this page, and I concur…love the signs, as a former NY-er…and loved the Fox interview as well! More live TV for you!!
So where can we order some of your signs. Love the pants one. We do need it here in Florida.
How about a sign that says 'Signs signs every where signs, fucking up the scenery"!!
It is really sad that New Yorkers have to be "trained" in these sorts of things… What a shame!
what a herb. go back to where you came from hipster goofball.
What's a "hipster goofball"? That's slang for Quaaludes right?
Jay's artwork was the inspiration for our newest video "Saggin In Pants" Please check it out and let US know your thoughts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XefSdXFBb4I&fe…
thanks jay! I’m happy that u where creative enough to think of this. And yes it is sad that it has to b done. I think the city should cut u a healthy salery. I wanna know where to buy them also.
this is so cool, we need these signs out here on the west coast too….outstanding..
To the guest who says, 'Signs signs every where signs, fucking up the scenery"!!, I think they are missing the point which is: seeing the ass of someone who you didn't even take out to dinner and probably are not attracted to is the very definition of fucking up the scenery. Actually I think the perpetrators know this and that is their goal. But isn't it such a small victory? Aim higher guys!!!
It’s about time NYers get slapped with the reality that their actions can affect other people. Have you seen GoingWithEddie.com
?
It publicly shames the rule breakers that these very signs were made for!
Enjoy!
TrustoCorp bite.
Thanks mate. You made this post as nice and as presentable and informative enough to be follow for people around Metropolitan. This is a clear reminder for those who doesn't follow a proper gesture. Thanks again mate. About the Pay Attention while walking your facebook status can wait, I think I've seen it before in some commercial if I am not mistaken. Anyways, thanks for this wonderful post.
Some people might just find signs like ordinary things around us but it is more than just informing us and making us aware of our surrounding.
Very impressive! Obviously you have put a special time in making this etiquette signs, very applicable. I'm sure this will produce positive results on people. Brilliant ideas. Thank you for sharing! http://www.apscunow.com
Not everyone is here to take pictures, some of us have places to go. Please dont block the sidewalks.
(this is a great sign for times square)
This is a nice article and funny signs. Funny but responsible signs. Do you have more pics of signs? and how about the Hiphop? I'm sure they react about that Pull up your pants sign. hahaha
