The Gugg’s insides are about to turn a money-shade of green. German artist Hans-Peter Feldmann is breaking the museum’s Hugo Boss award into $1s to line it with $100,000 worth of currency. Burn? Nope! It’s actually not about thumbing the cultural institution nor capitalism or power.
The 70-year-old artist hails from a time when “money and art didn’t exist” together, so this prize is real special to him. The piece will be made up of used, worn bills only; crisp paper doesn’t really represent the “notion of value in everyday life.” It will take 13 days to vertically pin each bill and arrange for extra guards and security cameras to protect the art bits from getting snagged.
If there was ever a direct challenge to conceptual art thieves Eva and Franco Mattes, this is it!
