Since the “True Identity of Banksy” eBay auction was pulled the second time — first, because the seller wasn’t offering anything tangible, then just after the auction hit a dollar short of $1 million — seller “jaybuysthings” says that he was “paid off” to shut down the sale, but was “permitted” to send out a misleading photo that has nothing to do with it.
So was this all just a prank? It’s possible. Perhaps Banksy is still trying to throw off Google searches for his identity and figures the more he can clog up the internet, the better. Then again, why would Banksy want to bring any more attention to his identity when he knows there’s this photo still floating around? Maybe it’s best to just not think about it too much, otherwise he wins either way.
