Banksy’s 10-year-old ‘Gorilla in a Pink Mask’ piece on a side of a Muslim center in Bristol was accidentally buffed, when a site employee “mistook” the valuable “street art” for “vandalism” the Daily Mail reports. That’s right. An illegal stencil is clearly not vandalism when it’s slapped with a price tag worth thousands of pounds because someone famous did it… right?

Well, Saeed Ahmed says he’s never heard of Banksy, nevertheless, he pleads, “I didn’t it know it was valuable. That’s why I painted over it. I really am sorry if people are upset.”

The head conservator of the International Fine Art Conservation Studios has been called in to attempt to excavate the piece out of the white paint.
