New York raked in $53 million dollars from cameras that catch drivers who run red lights. According to NBC New York, there are only 150 cameras across the five boroughs. The cameras were allowed to photograph law breaking motorists starting in 2007.

With officers writing fewer tickets to motorists as a result of this summer’s ticket fixing scandal and this startling new figure, the NYPD is probably now noticing that it might be easier to get the ‘bots to do their work for them. NBC also says that, “The DOT also is seeking approval from the state Legislature to install cameras that would catch motorists who exceed the city’s 30 mph speed limit.” I for one welcome our new traffic overlords. It may be big brother, but at least its not a crooked cop screwing you over.
