Photographer Bruce Davidson captured the Civil Rights movement and graced Beastie Boys album covers, but it’s his Subway series that’s getting some more much-deserved recognition. With graffiti as a layered, dense backdrop when not the action in progress, his gorgeously composed classics are definitive of an era.

Yet, he considers himself less of a documentary photographer and more of an artist — the city was his canvas and he was just following “a train of thought,” he tells WNYC, without even a chortle to signify that he realized he’s just made the pun of all puns. “Subway,” Bruce Davidson, Oct 3 – Oct 29, Aperture Gallery, NYC
