Harvest Dome — an art project made from upcycled umbrella spokes and empty soda bottles — shipwrecked at Rikers Island this week. The guards took preemptive measures (lest the giant was some sort of escape raft?) and lassoed, reeled in and towed it with a truck until it was “reduced to a pile of broken plywood and tangled metal.”

The object had successfully traversed the Bronx and East Rivers and was set to travel up Harlem River, but had to be cut off from the canoes that towed it when the weather got too wild and met its eventual end at the shores of the island.

Of the floating orb, the warden said it was the “strangest thing I’ve ever seen.” Guess he wasn’t around for Ai Weiwei’s Rikers shower room photo shoot?
