On Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a press release about the bill he signed, that prohibits smoking on all MTA platforms, including the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North—there’s already an existing ban on NYC subway platforms. However, two key pieces of information were missing that many media outlets didn’t bother to ask:
1) Who is going to enforce the law?
2) What’s the fine?
And the strategy worked. NBC, AP, New York Daily News, and The Journal News all basically reprinted the governor’s press release. For those who are curious. It will be enforced by MTA police, who are already costing a fortune in overtime, and the fine is $100. (Photo: Wikipedia)
