Gugg heads responded to the Human Right Watch-endorsed artist boycott over reported labor exploitation at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi construction site: As requested (and intended pre-boycott), an impartial work site monitor will arrive in May and all recruitment fees will be paid back to the workers… Also, stop making us look bad!
The Gugg’s full response states that much has changed since the draft report was made when significant construction hadn’t started.
We believe that the progress made [to protect workers’ rights] thus far is more than ceremonial. In fact, it signals fundamental changes in the emirates’ decades-long labour practices.
Once more, with feeling:
It is very troubling to us that your statement portrays the Guggenheim as a passive agent with little consciousness of the issues at hand. That is the exact opposite of the truth.
There’s your other side of the story.
