How Much Does 80 Years of “Graffiti Removal” Cost?

The production costs for British artist Mark Wallinger’s 164-foot life-like Horse statue are getting out of hand. England’s would-be tallest statue’s original budget of $3.2 million has now galloped up to $19.3 million to cover “maintenance” and “graffiti removal” for 80 years.

Alternatively, the budget could cover anti-graffiti “target-hardening” measures like surveillance, fencing and anti-climb devices, which would look ridiculous in the planned location of the giant steed – a desolate Ebbsfleet Valley area of Kent. It would also defeat the “public” part of this public art project.
