A little after 11:25PM, there was a big commotion on the south side of Zuccotti Park as someone mic checked that the NYPD was moving into to remove the “medical tent” (tents are a violation of the park’s rules.). Occupy Wall Street protesters immediately locked arms and vowed to protect it. Out of nowhere, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson swooped in and briefly spoke face to face with the NYPD as officers continued to amass on Cedar Street.

A demonstrator asked him to join the “human barricade” to which he immediately agreed. She took his hand and led him over to the tent, which he then proceeded to guard, locking arms with others who formed a circle around it.

After a few tense minutes, the police dispersed and the crowd cheered. The tent will not be removed tonight.

FCKING AWESOME. I LITERALLY HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES. #ows
thank you @RevJJackson <3
me too. the hope that rises in me every time there's a victory, no matter how small, rises all the way up into and out my eyes.
OccupyPortland sees you!
This Massachusetts 99%er encourages you to stay the course; God Bless the United States of America
Occupy Las Vegas , we see you, we feel you.
Vegas has been hit really hard and that state has few, if any, organizations to support people in any way like, for example, San Francisco has. Harry Reid does nothing. I wish 100,000 people could swoop in on that state.
What can Harry Reid do if there is obstruction by the Republicans? I am not a huge fan of Harry Reid, but Republicans are purposely tying up shit to prevent a recovery. I will continue to march for equality, this is more than just about Harry Reid.
@SAF, Do you realize that the Democrat-controlled Senate voted down the Jobs Bill? Are they obstructionists?
No Joanna, the bill was filibustered and the Dems didn't have the votes to break it. Try again.
Joanna, have you ever played Psst – Pass It On? …not a lot of difference here, please help to stop the mis-information, check your sources before posting. If this was intentional, you should be ashamed.
fuck I'm wheeping I mean leaking again
I'm in tears. NYPD using tactics right out of the Arab Tyrants Manual. Taking away the medical tent has nothing to do with tents not being allowed. It is to deny human beings medical help if injured. Be wary that next step is medics may be arrested on some or no pretext.
Thanks Rev Jackson for being there and helping out.
It seems every Occupy needs a designated celebrity to be on hand every day.
Designated celebrity? You want every Occupy to have a 1%er to protect them? wtf
Actually, I think any 1%er who is willing to stand in Occupation is a hero.
Penny said "It seems every Occupy needs a designated celebrity to be on hand everyday"
Not that she WANTED them there.
Just because they are the 1% doesn't mean they don't see the corruption going on in the world.
I was just thinking along the same lines…The police will step down from a celebrity but if it were me & you, that tent would be down.
I have seen the Seattle police at every assembly of people during and after the WTO deny medical attention to people in shock and seizing from gas, beaten, run over, or nearly paralyzed for life by concussion grenades shot at people point blank, lips shot off by rubber bullets… The police can/will kill you using "non-lethal" force before allowing access to medical attention if they can.
Arab tyrants manual … shut your mouth!!!
That is amazing! I tried to treat a Bicycle Police Officer who was attacked by a vicious dog in Ceasar Chavez Park at #OccupySacramento today. I am an EMT and could have gotten proper treatment started a full eight minutes before the FD arrived. They were confused and pumped from fighting off the dog
it cut off: I am giving this as an example that ANYONE can benefit from medical at #OWS
Do not trust "Reverend" Jesse Jackson! He is a lair, a hypocrite and he is merely in this Occupy Wallstreet gig for his own gain. He is a Divider and an Adulterer, as well.
Because of him, my Aunt and Uncle never lived to see Justice done to the back man and black woman who brutally murdered their daughter, my cousin.
The man died of AIDS complications. The woman was prepared to meet her execution without any objections or appeals because she knew that what she did was wrong.
In steps Jesse Jackson who tells her to fight for every appeal possible. She is still alive and fighting her execution. She has been doing so for almost 20 years!
She awaits her execution at Gatesville Prison in Texas.
If there is a Hell, Jesse Jackson is from there and deserves to be returned there.
Liar, not lair. My bad.
You're too emotional to be taken seriously. Get some counseling.
I feel your pain but you should be ashame of yourself for such harsh words.
Hmm. WWJD?
The anger and sadness that you are soaked in, from day to day, will probably never go away entirely.
To lose one of your own is the worst thing to happen to those who are left behind.
If I was in your shoes, I would most likely have said far worse here. I don't know if a stranger's words halfway across the world does you any good, but I'm sorry that violence came to you and your family. It makes me angry; every unnecessary death angers me. I'm sorry that violence came to my family, and everyone else's family.
I don't know about this so I will ask the question rather than claiming something I don't know about:
We often have a choice to accept things we do not agree with so that something bigger and more important to us can survive and progress. Does accepting what we don't agree/believe make us a sell-out? Or does it make us pragmatic, sensible, and able to look past issues that, in the bigger picture, could be holding us back? I don't know. To lie down and accept sounds a little bit like giving up rights in exchange for protection (Patriot Act) Would I want someone who got in the way of the vengeance/retribution/closure that an execution would bring to enjoy any positive publicity? fuck no. I would have to talk to 1 000 people who have lost family AND where the criminal involved was executed for their actions before I could make any claims. I want to know from people like this if the execution made them feel better. Without knowing this pain, I'm careful and say it with all my respect that an execution would not replace the empty feeling and sense of loss – I think this, but it may not be true, I don't know.
Regardless of anything and everything to do with Jackson, his contribution to OWS was/is vital. Secondly, Jackson doesn't have a ticket to the Illuminati's Bilderberg Theatre. He's in the 99%.
I wonder if I would have the strength of character to see his presence as a good thing. Few on this earth can set aside their pain for a greater good, because the greater good is not as close or as strong as as the pain you would feel for losing someone.
In this situation, you and Jackson are different. but you're both in the 99%, and it's only on common ground where Humankind can meet and move forward. Even if Jackson's chasing the lime light, his presence there was important and had benefit for our 99% movement.
I hope that one day you could face that man and tell him what you must have wanted to say for nearly 20 years, I hope that his response is respectful, and that you could be open enough to listen to what he would say. I hope that you both discover everything you have in common, rather than what makes you different and sets you apart. Only when we bury axes, forgive, and find a way to trust our hearts to handle our sadness for us, can the 99% solidify. And if that happens, every soldier and every policeman, will lay down their sticks and stones, their guns and missiles, take off their uniforms, and take their place in the 99%. Their boots will no longer cramp their feet, and the badges and medals won't pull down their shirt and making their collar scratch their neck. They would smile, relieved to be truly fully human again.
I don't know if this will anger you, but from one of Humankind to another, can I please tell you that after 20 years, and every day on top of that, your choices grow, and with that, more and more opportunities to visit your cousin's place of rest and tell her that you want to carry on with your life.
If you can, I think that you will feel 20 years lift up and off your shoulders. You can be free.
Most of all, I hope you're not offended by this.
For the 99%
Capital punishment is a slap to the creators gift of having life irregardless of the errroers we make in our lives. You should seek to have forgiveness to those who did this deed and all those you judge or your belief in a Christian version of God is flawed.
black man. Not back man. Oops.
I know of Rev Jesse's betrayals, but redemption is available to everyone. It can happen. Let him help.
I am so glad you came out to support #ows .This revolution is about everyone seeking a voice.
@ Joanna : not that I, myself, think there really should be a designated celeb art every occupy…but wouldn’t it be cool if those 1%ers earnestly joined the fight for economic justice? What about the ones who do support their fellow man, but happen to have caught a series of breaks in their lives? We need to shun them, too? I say, if they’re willing to lock arms and join the good fight, we should welcome them.
CONCUR! OWS will succeed because of open-mindedness, fairness, and fortitude. We ARE the 99%. Never forget.
AWESOME JESSE I watched Dick Gregory today on how they (repubs)will try to deminize OWS as filthy __mobs etc. just like they did in the 60S to the civel rights marchs & anti war protesters I live on Maui or I'd__be there GOD BLESS JESSE JACKSON, OWS & BARAK OBAMA I,mcoming
THIS WAS THE ULTIMATE
a logical person can look past their dislike for jesse jackson at least for 1 night.
Amen.
This movement has the spirit needed to succeed in its aims. Opinions123 is one of the reasons. Peace.
Not all the wealthly believe "by wealth alone". Lord Byron, Shelley, FDR, & JFK all fought and died for what was best for society ,not class alone and the Repeal of the FDR government IS the goal of the Wall Street elite.
What kind of BS rule is it to prohibit tents anyway? Is there a rational explanation for this rule?
If people could live in tents in public spaces they won't pay rent to landlords.
Thanks for being faithful as ever Rev. It has been along time since we locked arms in Cicero and Oak Park. Thrilled that the spirit of hope is alive in the streets once more. I was actually despairing of getting anyone to join us until we got arrested in DC a few weeks ago. Hope for a global revolution lives in the ows and otw.
We shall overcome some day….
@ShagataGanai says Superman could not have done a better job. Bless Rev. Jackson. We are all brothers and sisters. <tears>
Don't let this guy and his divisive ilk try to hijack a great movement….him and Sharpton are of the same mold.
Joey, if they didn't let the unions "hijack this great movement," how in the hell would Jesse Jackson have a chance? Did you hit your head when that scooter knocked you down?
Right wing jaberwocky… mean agenda. I am trying to find the bozo filter. Dang, well expect racists and right wing attempt to cause dissension. Perhaps should not be dignified with a reply. GFY.
Seeing Rev. Jackson takes me back to those leaders I grew up with…no matter what you may think of him the power of his presence is unmistakable…I miss the GREAT leaders …I believe some are rising now in this amazing movement! Thanks Rev.!
I wasn't there last night– I have two little kids, I'm sleeping at home for now– but I was there when the first Union (Transit Workers! Woot!) marched in. I read people online saying, "Oh, don't let the Unions in, they'll try to take over!" But honestly, I felt such relief– I don't have to hold up these beautiful people all by myself. There are others who are strong and are using the power they have to help. I was there when the word went out that they were postponing the cleaning. I stuck around until after 9, worried that while everyone was relieved and heading to work, something might happen… and the unions showed up, again. Sanitation, Food workers, I heard that the Teamsters were there but I went up to a group of TWU guys and thanked them for coming. I felt like I could finally go back to bed, with my two little kids, because the unions were watching over the liberty kids.
I mention this, because it's exactly my response when I see Cornel West and Jesse Jackson using their bodies and their names to support and protect this spark.
Thank you, sirs, for representing. It means the world to me, and the future to my children.
Thank you Jesse. And beware of the right wing jaberwocky with their racial slurs and talking smack about #occupy
The great demagogue Jackson is back again. LIsten to him, sheep, and you will never be more than mere victims in the palms of the Wallstreet-Washington DC marriage you purport to protest against.
Touched to see Mr. Jesse Jackson has not lost his mojo.
How many times have the NYPD attempted to remove this tent? Seems funny to me that Jesse is there, then suddenly they want to go remove this tent. Jesse is a lying, cheating, washed up hack that needs to get a grip on his declining popularity and retire from helping criminals enjoy a better life.
He is an attention whore and this was a publicity stunt. I wouldn't doubt that he paid the NYPD to act like they were going to remove the tent so he could be there to make a show.
I think you should go to Liberty Plaza, call a mic check, and repeat that comment out loud. Otherwise, you are a puzz.
I saw the whole thing and I believe that the the event was completely staged by OWS people onsite, the cops involved, and Jesse Jackson Inc. He arrived along with the news vans from CBS, MSNBC, and others. It was 9:30 – 10:00 when the cop supervisor entered the park and said the medic tent must go. Jackson, who had been on scene but in the background, went over to the tent. without actually interacting in any meaningful way with the people there He gave a rehearsed sound byte to any mic in sight . He expressed his support for the people and boom back into the limo. The entire event lasted maybe two minutes.
I don't care about Jackson one way or another. I support the OWS movement. If Jackson's endorsement makes people happy that's great. but it was theater.
free all animals; humans too.
I just tried to help RWB free his inner puzz.
NYPDs attempting to remove the tent at 11:30pm is abusive in itself.
I've come to the conclusion that anyone calling everyone else sheep in a comments section is an idiot who thinks they have it all figured out. Go back to listening to Alex Jones
People say a lot of bad things about Jesse, but I think he has a good heart for the people. Moving and also a Sincere Piece/Peace I believe.
Occupy Philly & Baltimore See ya!!!!
Interesting the few comments hating Jesse Jackson. A man who has never started a war or foreclosed on a home. He was with MLK when he died and I am sure he is not perfect but who is. Nevertheless he has dedicated his life to fighting for those who have nothing. I would rather 1 Jesse Jackson than 100 war mongering, wall street loving Obama's.
when they mock us for being 'leaderless' I try to remind them that the last time we tried this they killed Doctor King and the Brothers Kennedy. This time we have learned our lesson. When they claim that we have no real demands, I realize that they haven't even read what our "one demand" is; nor have they read from our list of grievances; because if they had, they would be occupying the space right next to me. These detractors haven't quite figured it out yet, but they are just as much one of the 99% as I am; I can only hope that they wake up.
The tents will not be removed tonight? So they have to go through this with the cops every night? What about their constitutional right to Freedom of Assembly? What about all of their other rights?
because of him mlk was assasinated…….i guess he must feel guilty……..i wouldnt trust him
I see a lot of hate on this thread. What's with that?
What is the deal with that, not very democratic? it's time to let go and go with it. we're all being screwed right now, the African Americans in this country are used to it. We can and should learn from their struggles.
We need to let go of saying who can and cant be a part of this movement. This revolution means something different to each one of us. What draws me to occupy may not mean jack to you. Who are you to say who's issues are valid and who's are not. There is space for everyone under this tent, including the 1% if they're on the side of social and economic justice.
free health care is yet one more arrow in their face.
I'm proud of everyone…for years Rev. Jackson and RevAL have wanted folks to just stand up for themselves..make some noise! It must make them proud to see everyone all over the globe standing up to the Wall Street Political Rep buying Oppressors!
