A few months back, the Village Voice ran a cover story about what a low priority it was for the NYPD to investigate cyclists maimed or killed in motor vehicle accidents, with reporter Camille Dodero laying out a pretty convincing argument.

As if that wasn’t enough, our very own art editor got walloped by a car (while walking), and is experiencing some similar issues outlined in the article.

Now, there’s this letter obtained by Gothamist from an attorney representing the family of Mathieu Lefevre, a 30-year-old artist who died when he was hit by a truck while riding his bike and dragged by a driver who left the scene of the accident, and wasn’t even cited for a traffic infraction. And it’s no wonder why. The detective looking into the case was not only lazy about gathering evidence, but also incompetent throughout the entire process.
