Over the next few weeks, the NYPD will begin an aggressive “crack down” on cyclists in Brooklyn who don’t follow traffic laws that have historically never been enforced reports the Brooklyn Paper. This will supposedly include ticketing bike riders for speeding (NYC speed limit is 30 mph), failing to signal before turning, and soon enough, not having a bell. You may want to brush up on all the rules (PDF doc), which include keeping your feet on the pedals.

who can we write to about this? it's really getting insane that all of these "crackdowns" have slowly pushed cyclists to second-class status in this city. and anyone who's spent 5 minutes on a bicycle in this city knows it's an epic journey of life and death just to get to work in the morning.
i just sent a letter to Transportation Alternatives, but i'm not really sure they have any teeth these days…
For the best results, you should write NYC Council members in Brooklyn, where this "crack down" is reportedly happening, although, it will probably also take place city-wide soon enough so here's all of them: http://animalnewyork.com/tag/nyc-high/
What about cracking down on the cars who park in the bike lanes… adding the bike lane on Flushing just created a new parking lane. Don't even get me started on the DeKalb high-speed-passing lane disguised as a bike lane….
§ 4-08 (e)(9) – Stopping, standing and parking prohibited in specified places
No parking, standing or stopping vehicles within or otherwise obstructing bike
lanes.
I'm assuming that this is referring to cars, hopefully they will be cracking down on this as well.
Just another Bloomberg revenue stream.
SIGNALLING? Cars don't signal. I do, but hell if anyone's looking.
Speeding? Laughing about how they intend to enforce that one.
Bell? Okay, you should have one, as well as lights if you're riding at night. Shouldn't be law, though.
"Operator must wear upper body apparel with business' name and operator's number on
the back." snickering… anyone seen this ever? Delivery guys are often doing the clueless riding (wrong way, on sidewalk, dark, etc)
Some of these like speeding are definitely stupid and yes cars should be held to the same standards. However, riding opposite of traffic and running red lights (I've seen several near accidents and almost been hit by wrong-way drivers) should be enforced. I think cars disrespect the bike-related laws because many bikers disrespect their own laws, some of which are there to protect us bikers.
