On Wednesday, dozens of activists gathered in front of Mayor Bloomberg’s posh townhouse on the Upper East Side—a neighborhood which only accounted for 34 of 50,383 low level pot arrests—to draw attention to the NYPD’s War on Weed and its many casualties.

The police department’s blatant disregard for current laws regarding possession and abject trickery has led to a disproportionate amount of minorities being prosecuted, as well as a staggering $75 million in costs to taxpayers.

Not surprisingly, these frivolous busts made up the majority of all NYPD arrests citywide, which should drop precipitously once lawmakers are done closing the loopholes officers have been taking advantage of. It should be interesting to see which group they target next to make up for the slack.
