People in Trouble Laughing Pushed to the Ground

Circular clusters of balloons and fists of People in Trouble Laughing Pushed to the Ground come from the framed “self-contained universes” trapped under stickers in the Belfast Exposed Archive. The faces were damaged into anonymity by the archive’s visitors.

This project uses journalistic and civilian photography of Troubles in Northern-Ireland to show violence and the everyday when violence is the everyday. Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin’s other photo-collaborations include spotlighted executions in Iran and Israeli forests state-grown over Arab city ruins (context).
