Since most Russian film the filtered Westward are boring epics by Putin cronies and glossy shit that goes boom, it’s fantastic to see this freshly subtitled trailer for the fiction film My Joy. “A truck driver takes a wrong turn and finds himself lost in a bleak Russian underworld…” Lesson one: Don’t pick up hookers at truck stops.
Lesson two: Russian villages are full of grey-fleshed, psychotic old timers, authoritarians in uniform with a hard on for violent beatings and other misadventures. Sure it prunes the olde “ultra-nihilistic parable of post-communist Russia” motif, but it looks solid, dark and twisted.
Out now in select theaters.
