Photographer, artist, and unofficial LES mayor, Clayton Patterson, recalls the time he illegally painted the wall on Houston Street and the Bowery in 1990. He tells The VIllager that “it had been empty for quite a long time,” and then one day, he “just decided to take it over.”
Unlike Kenny Scharf’s mural, his wasn’t vandalized by graffiti writers, in fact, it lasted the whole summer until Chico painted an ad over it for a wine bar in Soho. Figures! Obviously that didn’t go over well and so Patterson threw buckets of paint all over it. Pissed off, the legal muralist went to Patterson’s studio and demanded that he be reimbursed for the paint he used. Let’s just say that’s didn’t happen. Read the fascinating account here.
