For the first time ever, Nathan’s Famous held a hot dog eating contest in China as a lead up to its official competition on July 4th in Coney Island. Chris Lam emerged as the victor and set a “country-record” according to the Wall Street Journal, by scarfing down 16 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
The second place winner consumed 13 in the same time, giving them a combined total of 29 downed weiners. When the challenge ended, reigning champ Joey Chestnut engaged in an solo-face stuffing exhibition and managed to gag himself with 39 hot dogs in just five minutes, making a mockery of his Chinese counterparts, who understandably, are still amateurs in the art of gluttonous American traditions. Over there, not starving is a competition all to itself.
