Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev has ordered the veiling of two Aidan Salakhova sculptures representing their country at the Venice Biennale. One’s fairly ordinary, but her other work is a miniature Holy Mecca thrust inside a giant, vaginal marble frame.

The artist claims that the work is covered up because it was damaged in shipment, but a source says otherwise. A Russian blog reports that the president personally covered the offensive orifice with a drape the day before the pavilion’s opening, lest the public finds out that there’s a secular presence in Azerbaijan.
