Velodrome Proposed for Bronx Armory

It’s a good thing the City Council did something right two years ago when it shot down an idea to turn a rundown armory in the Bronx into a shopping mall, because fast forward to 2011 and Michael Green, former president of the Century Road Club Association, has a much better idea: make it a velodrome and BMX track.

There’s definitely enough room for both at the Kingsbridge Armory and so he submitted plans to develop the property.

Green envisions a cycling center suitable for holding international events, which is currently impossible—track wise—at Kissena due to it being outdoors, bumpy and 400 meters long (the Olympic standard is 250 meters).

The only real drawback, is that like the latter, it would also be located in the boondocks, but on the flip side, it’s close to two subway lines and at least New York would have an indoor velodrome again, just like in the ol’ days. Due to the NASCAR factor inherent in track bike racing, I can see this sport creating a huge draw for spectators too.
