Last night, the 2012 Vimeo Festival Awards were hosted at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts just south of Washington Square Park. Accolades were given for more than a dozen categories including documentary, motion graphics, experimental video, captured, action sports and a newly featured lyrical genre.
Young creative types in checkered shirts and TOMS shoes shared some genuine and some irritatingly pretentious displays of humility while gushing their 2-minute thank you speeches at the mic.
One of the highlights and saving graces of the $60 event (I took advantage of a last-minute free ticket offering) came from the London-grown musician beatboxer, Beardyman (birth name, Darren Foreman) who used his notorious live looping skills to improv a mixed-genre country, reggae, motown, jungle ditty — about cheese.
All of the genres — and the song theme itself — were chosen on the fly by random audience participants. Above is our video of him showing off his chops. The jam session was later joined by the clever Brooklyn-based comedian and musician, Reggie Watts.
The film festival continues through Saturday and will feature several screenings, speakers and workshops. Advanced tickets are sold out, but you may still have a chance to get in.
