At a firearm buyback event hosted at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jamaica, Queens on Saturday, police recovered 509 weapons, including 245 revolvers, 168 semi-automatic pistols, one AK 47, a Tec-9, and a Calico 9mm with a 50 round magazine. People were encouraged to turn in any gun, legal or illegal, to the church, in exchange for a $200.00 gift card. The overwhelming turnout might suggest that the gun buyback program may be an effective alternative to stop and frisk, as the program has been responsible for 8,200 guns being taken off the street since its inception.
