I’ve lived in New York for kind of a while, and the reason I’m here is because I felt so instantly and unreasonably at home here the moment I arrived. But nonetheless, I still feel like a tourist maybe 70% of the time. I think a lot of us do. I think that’s one of the reasons I love living in New York, really. I hope this says something to explain my acute and irreversible adulation of these videos tourists take when they visit the city. There’s an ecstatic embrace of what’s so weird about this city, and what’s so beautiful, so baffling, so fucking great. The things we forget to notice: that very particular shade of grey, the way some people look when they zone out on the train.

All this is to say: please watch this video Jason Allen Lee shot while visiting the city. There are moments in this little film that make me want to chain myself to this city forever. An old woman watching two men play ping pong in the park at night, a business man digging to his ice cream at JFK––even the angry guy yelling outside a subway station makes me so happy to be here, so happy to be a tourist at home.
