Dutch Artist Anne Ten Donkelaar is a self-described “Butterfly Doctor” with an “insect workshop.” Using gold, old maps, roots, threads and embroidery, she repairs the fragmented wings and bodies of butterflies recovered from the Hortus Botanicus Butterfly Garden in Amsterdam.
In an interview with art blog My Modern Met she described how the series was hatched: “I had my own collection of damaged butterflies, so I decided to repair each one differently according to their needs” she said. In reconstructing these mangled butterflies, she hopes to “give the butterflies a second life.”
Very strange. Very beautiful. Slightly demented. Just the way we like it.
