Ian Ruhter is a photographer who converted a van into a giant wet plate camera. His short documentary Silver & Light depicted his attempt to capture the Yosemite with just that: Silver and light. Ruhter’s emotional journey through the costliest of all photography processes attracted a million viewers and now he is back with the next installment.
Ruhter seems to have moved on from documenting landmarks to documenting individuals across America. The new short features an array of unexpected characters and an exponentially more hopeful attitude than Ruhter’s previous release. Each completed wetplate photo cost the photographer $500 and that’s not counting all the failed prints. Think about that next time you use your DSLR on Auto .
