Within earshot of New York State Senator Eric Adam’s proposal to arm transit workers with Tasers, a livery cab association is lobbying the Taxi and Limousine Commission to allow its drivers to carry licensed guns on the job. Over 400 cabbies were robbed and one was shot dead in 2010. Subway and bus workers faced 94 assaults last year, up 22 from the year before. Overall, transit worker harassment went from 936 cases in 2010 to 1,092 in 2011. Some elected officials, like Sen. Adams, think that the best way to combat these problems is to arm up. The MTA and NYPD do not and both oppose his bill. The TLC had already released a statement about the gun push, stating that “It is important for public safety and perception to disallow any weapons in the vehicle.”
