Sure, the new Lolita Lempicka perfume ad featuring Elle Fanning is artistic with all kinds of ethereal bells and whistles. The camera work is stunning, the set is out of this world and the music is a perfect fit. But, um, Elle Fanning is 14 years old.

Lolita Lempicka being a pseudonym of french designer Josiane Maryse Pividal, draws inspiration from Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka and… you guessed it, Nabokov’s Lolita. Considering the actress’ age, it is hard not to draw a parallel and question the intentions of this arty ad, especially once Fanning starts straddling a tree midway through the video, and considering her older (too old?) sister’s similarly sensual endorsement of a Marc Jacobs perfume that caused a huff awhile ago.

The advertisement walks a very vague line with the visual message. Jumping between the shots of innocent childish exploration and possibly provocative close-ups that are a little too risky for comfort, it clearly exploits its lead subject. As is the trend. Sigh.
