ANIMAL’s new feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their idea sketch next to a finished piece. This week, Ron English. This week, POPaganda maestro artist Ron English gives us amazing visual insight into his process. Each element of his final artwork is conceived differently. This is just one of them.
My characters appear in many different forms throughout my work. Usually it begins with a sketch, then proceeds to a sculpt, then a set, then a photograph, then a painting. I made a sketch of a character called “Zephyr Elizabeth,” named after my daughter, who is in a kid band called The Kursed Kids.
This is a small painting I did after the sketch.
I used a prototype of the Zephyr Elizabeth character, placed in a shadowbox set. I rearranged the figures until I was was happy with the overal set-up.
This is the finished oil painting, The Virgin Diaries.
