Monday evening, ANIMAL paid a visit to the New York edition of the Fernet Branca Barback Games, otherwise known as the Olympics of barbacking. Forty New York barkeep’s assistants congregated at Webster Hall, displaying their prowess in everything from speedily sorting through liquor bottles to carrying kegs, all on a tire-laden obstacle course. We took the opportunity to ask some of the competitors what they’d like to say on behalf of members of the oft-under-appreciated profession everywhere, and barback Dave Busch didn’t mince words. “Shit rolls downhill,” he said. “It’s the worst job on the face of the earth.”
