At around 10:40 this morning, an enormous whale was spotted washed up on the beach near Beach 216th Street and Palmer Place in Breezy Point. Police officers and firefighters immediately responded, spraying the animal with water in an effort to keep it hydrated while marine mammal specialists showed up. According to the Daily News, there’s a chance that the whale is pregnant–and whatever happens, the outlook is not good for the animal’s survival.

“When large whales strand, it’s very difficult,” said National Marine Fisheries Service biologist Mendy Garron. “Their body physiology is so different from even smaller animals that the minute they get on the beach they’re being compromised because their internal organs are being crushed by their weight.”
