Infamously perved-out photographer Terry Richardson can’t seem to go a month without some sexual controversy hyping him up further, even when the models in his shots are fully clothed and not doing anything all that controversial. His latest campaign for NY’s stuck-up gym of choice, Equinox, is fueling all sorts of negative feedback from concerned citizens who feel the models in question come off as too ‘thin’ rather than healthy and fit.
They must’ve missed that super convincing photo where two skinny bitches are arm-wrestling on a table covered in pastry. Personally I don’t see what the problem is when you compare this series to their past ads, that show frozen half-naked motorcycle riders and dudes using women as push-up bases.




























I don’t think these are controversial because of the photographer. There is an Equinox gym in San Francisco with giant barely-clad people out front looking uber-sexy. I think the issue here is the continued glorification of waif-ish, over-cosmetic laden unrealism that makes most people feel not only bad about themselves, but also informs an “ideal” body image that is simply unattainable unless it is your whole lifestyle (i.e. if you are a model).
The identity of the photographer was unknown to me and still I was irked by the manipulative nature of Equinox’ branding efforts. I love sex-drenched and suggestive photography. When it is used to create a false standard to improve business I feel the context sours the aesthetic merits.
