We’ve been anticipating the opening of Buckyball for some time now and today, the installation created by Leo Villareal goes on display today at Madison Square Park and will remain on public view until February 1st. For those of you who have not been following the project with our pre-pubescent enthusiasm, here is everything you need to know.

The new Villareal piece is inspired by Buckminster Fuller, the man behind the iconic C60 atom design, which was consequently used in Epcot Spaceship Earth structure. Villareal interprets Fulller’s concept via interactive LED light tubes arranged in a double layer geodesic shape. The structure is loaded with some fancy chance driven software causing the light patterns to respond to their environment in order to create a visual marvel.

Check out a preview of the piece in an amateur video above and make sure you experience it in person before it becomes a tourist hot spot, much like its conceptual predecessor.
