Caviar kingpin Mario Gabarino broke the second crack commandment when traveling through Panama–he let ’em know his next move, and he got picked up for it while changing planes in the Central American country. Gabarino was arrested for smuggling over $10 million of high quality fish eggs from Italy into New York 23 years ago, and had been on the lam ever since jumping bail after his indictment in 1987. Now, at 69 years old, he’ll serve four years in prison and pay up on $3 million in unpaid import taxes. I understand that the government needs its money, but you’d think there’d be a statute of limitations on something as harmless as illegal caviar. Dude’s been out of the game for years.
