New reports released by the FBI indicate that a plot existed to kill New York Governor Hugh Carey on the eve of his successful election day, a secret that the governor kept from his children to the grave. The documents explain that the potential assassin called the FBI in New York and explained that he “was involved with three unidentified individuals in a plot to assassinate United States Congressman Hugh Carey on Monday, Nov. 4, 1974.”

The man, who claimed to have been released from Central Islip Psychiatric Center 4 months earlier, explained that he received $5,000 for initial involvement and would have been paid an extra $20,000 once he had killed Carey. Police tracked the call, sent the caller to a psychiatric hospital, and killed the plot.

A recent widower and father of 12, Carey decided not to tell any of his children about the attempt on his life. Governor Carey is best known for helping to build Battery Park and the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, and also improved care for the mentally ill. (Photo: NYTimes)
