There’s something really hypnotic about this video of a young dude dancing apparently all by himself in the middle of an elementary school’s deserted basketball blacktop. Maybe it’s the eerie stillness of the background, or maybe it’s that the film is entirely silent, save the sound of the wind and the dancer’s subtle breaths and murmurs. But I think it’s probably this surreal style of dance—partly pop-and-lock, partly miming, partly like a weird puppetry. As his performance ends, the dancer, who I guess is named Cassette, briefly explains his style. “That was a little pop-locking, mixed with brukker, mixed with animations, mixed with aliens,” he says, before breaking down exactly what each of these influences look like. It’s fitting that it’s on a public school blacktop. School’s back in session, after all.
