January, an 8-bit game from digital artist Disasterpeace, is as meditative as it is easy to play. Simply navigate your adorable sarf-clad character left and right using the arrow keys to catch snowflakes, and listen as quiet, consonant tones emerge with each flake caught. Bigger flakes make chords, while the little guys play single notes. That’s all there is to it. It’s fun!
For nerds like yours truly, there’s a slew of controls to guide how the music gets made–specifying key, switching out of pentatonic mode, that sort of thing–but to be honest, I think it’s more fun to just stroll around and let the algorithms do their thing.
Play January here.
