Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ — a pretty photograph of a plastic crucifix floating in a jar of the artist’s urine — has been attacked plenty with words, curses and hammers. Its #1 Hater is Bill Donahue, the current president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the United States. So, he made this video in response wherein he presents an “artwork” “desecrating” the “God” of “Liberalism,” President Obama. Shall we tell him what we think?
It’s a bobble head of Obama and fake poop in a jar. The press office of the Edward Tyler Nahem gallery in Midtown declined to critique the work with a “No comment.” But you can! The Catholic League’s number is (212) 371-3191.
Don’t rant, mind you. Don’t tell Bill’s friends that he appears confused about New York’s geography or the imaginary body of “the cultural elite” that is “persecuting” him or that taking cheap shots at “the Muslims” makes him sound like a dolt. Don’t even begin to tell him that this piece is aesthetically and conceptually weak and that the “God”/God metaphor isn’t really coherent and the found objects are assembled merely to incite, not to induce dialogue, as a juvenile attack on a specific political enemy, not symbol of divinity. Just give him some helpful quotes from his Holy Book.
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you…”
— Luke 6:27
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.”
— Romans 12:14
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
— Matthew 5:44
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
— Luke 6:31
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
— Peter 4:8
