CUNY’s New Community College doesn’t have its own building, but the loaner isn’t all that shabby. Located right along Bryant Park on West 40th, its inaugural freshman class of 330 students will begin their pursuit of higher education in a pretty nice part of town. The city’s first new community college in forty years seeks to succeed by requiring its students to enroll full-time for their freshman year in one of of five areas of study–liberal arts, business, human services, urban studies and information technology and offering “remedial courses only alongside credit-bearing classes”. Its temporary location in a really nice part of town should give way to a permanent location in a really nice part of town–Columbus Circle–within ten years, if all goes as planned.
