Wednesday was the second Manhattanhenge of the year, and the second most epic, obviously, as nothing could compare to the celestial event as it occurred in May. Sylvain Whissell made this awesome (in the biblical sense) timelapse of July 11th’s full-sun Manhattanhenge on what looks to be 56th Street. The video is pretty dark—Whissell laments its underexposed nature—but I think the overwhelming blackness only adds to what I have always said is a satanic, or at the very least, deeply pagan holiday for those witchy New Yorkers among us. The brake lights of taxis and red traffic lights are like the blinking eyes of demonic beasts, the orange “don’t-walk” hands are imbued with new, more dramatic meaning. Manhattan, the mouth of Hell.
