At this point, I assumed no co-opting of fixed gear bikes could surprise me, so I have to hand it to Designer Shoe Warehouse. This new ad campaign on the subway promoting their 34th Street store had me reflexively asking WTF from the moment it caught my eye. (Photos: ANIMALNewYork)

Gotta love hipsters…. "I had a fixed gear bike first, before they were cool. They are so uncool now that people know about them. I'm gonna go ride a big wheel now." You can replace "fixed gear bike" with almost anything that hipsters think are cool. I guess Hipsters didn't do one thing before it was cool to do so, that is drink PBR. That good shit's been around forever, and they can't take any credit for it's rise in fame either!
Neither of the images you've attached show the rear hub, which is the only way to tell if its a fixie. It could be a single speed w/freewheel or even have more gears in the back with any number of nonstandard (though not unheard of) cable routings.
Love the blog, but I had to call you on this.
Judging from the hideous color schemes, they are Big Shot or State bikes, with a flip-flop hub set on freewheel
Technically yes, but it's kinda obvious that they were going for a fixed gear look, not that single-speed roadbike with a flip-flop hub vibe.
I love how hipster this conversation is. I also love hipsters. Hipster-haters are trite and need to update their 1990s hairdo.
New GQ mag goofs on hipsters running a cartoon of a mustached fix rider, they say gets pushed down the block a lot, then a feature spread with a suit wearing model pushing a gleaming orange track bike. Got a front break on it though. I figure the small staff is biting off each other
