A group of organic urban farmers are using Kickstarter to help fund what they are describing as “New York City’s largest commercial apiary.” The project is being organized by Brooklyn Grange and will be comprised of a free beekeeper apprenticeship—unlike BoroughBees’ program, no experience is necessary—to care for 25 hives capable of producing about 1,000 lbs. of honey on a 45,000 square rooftop in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Additionally, participants “will also undertake a full-scale bee breeding program to create a line of local queens, genetically adapted” to the city environment. So far, they’ve raised almost $13,000, but are still short of their $20,000 goal with 7 days to go. Previously, the group used Kickstarter to fund their first rooftop farm in Long Island City.
