Between the federal investigation into his 2010 campaign finances, his specious claims about the vandalism at his office last month, and his alleged ties to organized crime, Congressman Michael Grimm (R-NY) is a risky guy to back right now. And yet, that’s just what former mayor Rudy Giuliani is doing, appearing in a Grimm campaign ad that touts the incumbent Republican’s “integrity and character,” while denouncing the “shameful attacks in the media” against Grimm.
Yesterday, the New York Times published an article that details the business relationship between Grimm and a man named Bennett Orfaly, an alleged associate of “Fat Tony” Morelli of the Gambino crime family. The claims arose when Orfaly tried to post bail for Ofer Biton, a former Grimm fundraiser who has been charged with immigration fraud, and whose campaign donations are at the center of the federal investigation against Grimm. It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which all of this blows over for the Staten Island Republican.
