Cab fares may be rising in the near future, but this may not be as good for cab drivers as it is for cab owners. Most drivers rent their cabs on a per-shift basis up-front, pay for their own gas, maintenance, and cleaning after any messy passengers. Also, if you tip by credit card, they lose out on five percent and have to deal with any other fees garage owners may decide to stick them with. So yes, higher fares ought to be good for cab drivers–but they don’t really see much of their fares to begin with.
